I meant to get to this earlier, but didn't get a chance. I think this is worth pursuing, and is something we ought to at discuss further and perhaps consider for JavaFX 27.

What that means for your existing PR, https://github.com/openjdk/jfx/pull/1714, is that you will either need to also delay that to JavaFX 27 or proceed with API knowing that it will change at least somewhat if and when we later introduce attached properties.

I'll add a comment in that PR with a couple suggestions if you want to try to get that in for 26.
