While proxies seem to cause a lot of grief, it is really is best just to get on with it and use one. I have used Protocol.script when running without a server (off a USB), but there are enormous mountains to climb in making this work well. The example proxies available are simple whitelist proxies but a proxy can be so much more - modifying responses on the fly with complex joins, managing security filters, enabling user-specified servers etc.

Also, think a bit before setting a WFS vector layer. This means drawing and symbolizing is done by javascript interpretor on your browser which is very much slower than WMS server. Consider using WMS for display, WFS for query.
