While the producer implementations are quite different, there are no protocol-level changes. The meaning of the rid has not changed. The traffic on the wire is functionally equivalent regardless of whether it's a 2.2 or 2.3 consumer or producer.
There is a new operational attribute (entryDN) added in 2.3, which older releases won't recognize. 2.2.24 or newer will accept it (though its operational behavior is not implemented in 2.2).
