Have you updated your ACL's to the 2.3 syntax?
Here is what I have
access to *
by self write
by peername=10.19.14.141 write
Try "peername.ip" rather than just "peername".
As for the logging, you can put "loglevel 256" in slapd.conf, and then look
at the local4.* syslog messages (I modify syslog.conf to dump them into
their own file generally, like /var/log/ldap).
