I understand, but this is a legacy (really legacy) application that can't
be changed. Is NTLM still working?

If your Cyrus-SASL build was built with NTLM enabled, you should be able to use it as a mechanism to bind to OpenLDAP, since that's handled by Cyrus-SASL.
