I just found that the phenomenon only is seen if there is already some character in the box and the suggest list is non-empty. If for example the list of authors contained only the item "Test", it would be possible to type "é" or "bést" but not "tést".

However, it is not possible to compose special characters using several keys in the edit box. For example, trying to enter "é" by pressing first "´" and then "e" gives "´e". The workaround is to go to the author database and edit the author.
