Just to add to this, the same thing also happens if I try to use MySQL instead
of Derby. Are there any new (since 1.8) java components that 1.9 depends on
that may not be bundled in the java version shipped in Ubuntu 10.04?

Hi,

That's exactly the one I'm also using... can't get it to work here, though.

You should use sun-jdk6

I just tried release 1.9.x on a Debian machine, there where no errors during
startup.

My Java Version:
java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit
Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)

Everything should be fine.

Sebastian
