On that topic, a few people on IRC have reported problems with SD-booting because the u-boot environment specifies a "rootfstype=ext2" kernel parameter but the kernel they are using does not have built-in support for ext2 (only for ext3).
My personal preference is to use ext3 (even if the journal writes may reduce the lifetime of the SD card), but if it stays as ext2 then the kernel defconfig-* files should be updated to have that filesystem built-in.
