It is late again and I might miss the point. The package version contains the 
git hash but then you might run a different version than was installed to the 
rootfs. So if uname -a would report the hash as well I wouldn't mind.

trying to answer what mike brought up.
users:
        opkg upgrade and they will get the new kernel flashed and modules 
installed.

devs:
        modules from the old rootfs might not load, so either don't care, copy 
your 
modules over or cheat on the kernel version. I think we can cope with that.
