I wonder how hard it would be to pass such exceptions in SNMP4J up to the right walker in OpenNMS. Right now, we log a timeout in the appropriate daemon log and in a separate log file (was output.log, is it now in uncategorized.log?) we log the BER decoding exception. These two very valuable pieces of information aren't linked, and the timeout log message is a misleading lie.

I think it would be a great usability enhancement to fix this, as there will always be plenty of broken agents out there, and this stuff is hard enough as it is for the 99.999% of our user base who are non- experts with SNMP. Anyone have any ideas on how we might do this?

Have a look at comment #7 in this bug
<http://bugzilla.opennms.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2294
, which describes a similar-sounding problem with a 3Com SuperStack
3 Switch 3870. That device is illegally including 64-bit counters in
SNMPv1 responses. Try the snmpwalk command in that comment and see
whether any ifHC* objects are included in the output; if so, it's
likely that you're seeing the same problem with this device.

Telling OpenNMS to use SNMPv2c with this device may help.
