This is a problem throughout OpenNMS when rules are based on dynamic  
values. I am hoping we have this fixed in the near future.

In the meantime, there are two things to check:

1) In /opt/opennms/contrib is a rtc_restart.sh script which should  
restart the rtcd process and update the categories.

2) Since you are a coder-guy, check out the asset modification code in  
the GUI. When you commit a change to asset information it generates an  
"asset information changed" event. I wrote some code in the  
BroadcastEventProcessor for rtcd to reinit the info for the node when  
the asset changes. Perhaps we can sent that event when SNMP info is  
added, too.
