This is a problem throughout OpenNMS when rules are based on dynamic values. I am hoping we have this fixed in the near future. In the meantime, there are two things to check: 1) In /opt/opennms/contrib is a rtc_restart.sh script which should restart the rtcd process and update the categories. 2) Since you are a coder-guy, check out the asset modification code in the GUI. When you commit a change to asset information it generates an "asset information changed" event. I wrote some code in the BroadcastEventProcessor for rtcd to reinit the info for the node when the asset changes.
