Until recently, maven wasn't packaged in either Debian or Ubuntu, so it was 
convenient to have it in subversion.

Wonder if it might be helpful to have build.sh try 'which mvn' to see if 
there's a system version of maven installed before it tries using the maven 
from subversion?  Or might that cause problems if a user has an old copy of 
maven installed on their system?
