It's worth pointing out that this question (as well as your other one) are really off-topic for this list, which is for discussing the development of OpenNMS, i.e. changes to or questions about the source code. You probably want the opennms-discuss list for end-user type questions. > To start, is it possible to add nodes to monitor by hostname? Not directly. One problem with hostnames is that they're squishy -- the set of IP interfaces that a given hostname represents often changes over time. Another problem is that you end up with your DNS resolvers on the critical path for every operation that your OpenNMS is doing. Sometimes this is what you want, but usually it's not. > I've been able to add them by IP address, but I want to be able to > move drives from one system to another or where there IP may change > and would prefer to set them up by hostname. I don't really understand your scenario -- it sounds as if you've spent quite a lot of time thinking about and developing it, so that it makes intuitive sense to you, but to paraphrase Sartre, hell is other people's use cases ;) I suggest backing up a bit, laying out in a bit more detail your goals along with the things you've tried, results you expected, and results actually gotten. Post that as a new thread on the opennms-discuss list and you'll probably get plenty of help. -jeff
