Hello list,

we had a few offline discussions about using an Q&A board like stack overflow.
With the OpenNMS Foundation we have now some possibilities to run such kind of
services. I had some support from Marcel Fuhrmann, Ron Roskens, Markus Neumann,
Jeff Gehlbach and me spent some time in figuring out good it works and would
like share our results and this is a rough pro/con list.

Pro Q&A / Con mailing list
--------------------------
- You can vote answers, good answers appear directly below a question, this
gives good context
- You can vote good questions - Same or relevant questions are more present
cause they are on top of the list
- You see unanswered questions, helps and encourage people to answer one and
can be more effective
- With voting answers it gives us also the possibility to reflect ourselves to
improve answering questions
- We recognized similar questions in the mailing list over time which a Q&A
board can help to de-duplicate questions

Con Q&A / Pro mailing list
--------------------------
- You can’t use it offline
- It is not in your mail workflow
- It’s just another web 2.0 application which a few not like
- Archives and information decentralization - Everybody has everything on his
own notebook or mailbox. In Q&A everything is on one servers SQL database.

What quite immediately came up was the issue, dividing or splitting questions
between the mailing list and the Q&A board. In my point it is important
opennms-discuss is not obsolete with a Q&A board. We need discussion about
issues with OpenNMS and how it behaves or should behave in network management.
This discussions can not be easily answered and for this reason need really a
discussion ;)

We have created the Q&A board in

  http://ask.opennms.eu

You can login with a Github or Google login. If somebody is interested in
helping to moderate Q&A’s please do not hesitate and drop me a note.

Please feel free for any feedback

Have a nice day with greetings from Fulda
