It depends on the vendor, some vendors doesn't require to pair in some cases for example sending files, but require to pair to others example receive files. But for other vendors pairing is fundamental, and you need to pair all the time, no matter if you run as master or as slave (in the RFcomm connection, layer where ObexFTP is transported). Anyway that's not a problem, unleash you don't know how to set up BlueZ which can be a big headache up to version 3, if you need help with this mail me
