This problem also occurs in locked down retail Point of Sale (cash-registers).

Example: The barcode scanner is dead, the clerk swaps the barcode scanner.

You don’t want “Please insert driver Disk” to appear.

Many scanners have a configuration option to enable/disable the SN.

That said, reason for having SNs associated with a specific device.

This lets you specify Driver (Version X) that only works with Device Version 
(OLD)
And Driver Version Y works with device version (NEW)
