I appreciate that we finally agreed on something, but, in practical terms, what 
is the complete options list to be used, with harmful and useless options 
removed?


to avoid such questions, I would suggest an option --enable-all, and maintain 
in the configure script what 'all' means. 

usage would be:

./configure --enable-all --disable-parport-ppdev ...
