openpkg 2.5 pcre configure error

I get this error when building pcre (2.5) under debian:

checking build system type... Invalid configuration `i686-pc-linux-': machine `i686-pc-linux' not recognized
configure: error: /bin/sh ./config.sub i686-pc-linux- failed

When I run ./config.guess I get i686-pc-linux-, but I believe I should get i686-pc-linux-gnu.  Not sure if anyone has seen this problem before.
