Hmmm, well, it sounds like it must be an irix nfs client thing. I would start reviewing the nfs client options on irix. Is the nfs share auto mounted or is it a manual or *fstab entry? The mount has it's own defined options and defaults which might be different than the other servers. That's where I would start looking.
