Hi,

We're in the beginning stages of redesigning many aspects of the
OpenSA web server, the included modules and the documentation. One of
the primary reasons for this is enabling the OpenSA web server for
professional usage and enabling more people to profit from the power
of the Apache web server, on which the OpenSA web server is based.

The redesign will be a fundamental modification of the current
release, therefor we invite everyone to comment on and influence the
ongoing changes.

OpenSA web server distribution
==============================
Since the OpenSA web server continues to grow and includes more and
more modules, the way the OpenSA web server is distributed in the
future will be transformed into a system, which allows for easy
addition of new modules and functions.
To allow users to get their individual system up and running within
short time, we'll split the distibution into a basic distibution, a
documentation distribution and several module distributions.

The basic distribution will include the Apache (current version is
v1.3.14), mod_ssl (current version is 2.7.2) and OpenSSL (current
version is 0.9.6). This will dramatically reduce download times and
the package size.

The module distibutions will include a single module along with it's
documentation. Currently the following modules are ready for release
and are in test usage at my company:

 o mod_asp
 o mod_ColdFusion
 o mod_dav
 o mod_JServ
 o mod_ssl
 o mod_php
 o mod_throttle
 o Tomcat

Both the basic and the module distibrutions will be made available in
compiled and in source form.

OpenSA web server documentation
===============================
The new documentation distribution will include the new OpenSA manual
in several languages. At this point an english and a german version
are planned. A proposal for the planned contents can be viewed online
at http://www.opensa.org/manual/. Please comment on it. Within the next
days the first parts of the manual will be published.

OpenSA CVS repositories
=======================
To reflect the above changes, the structure of the repositories on the
project's cvs server (cvs.opensa.org) will be changed.

The new structure will have these modules:

  o opensa
This module contains the basic distribution.
    Apache 1.3.14, mod_ssl 2.7.2 and OpenSSL 0.9.6 have been
    checked in.
    AVAILABLE
  o installshield
This module will contain all files required to create your own
InstallShield release of the OpenSA web server. InstallShield 6.1
is used to create the OpenSA releases.
    NOT YET AVAILABLE
  o manual
This module will contain the new OpenSA web server documentation.
    NOT YET AVAILABLE
  o modules
This module will contain the available modules. The modules listed
above are prepared for check-in, but require some changes due to
the restructuring of the repositories and the upgrade to Apache
    1.3.14.
    PARTLY AVAILABLE

Let's get things started,

Daniel S. Reichenbach
