Thank you for your responses.  I believe we have resolved the issue.  We were 
originally doing a make install.
We had previously downloaded and built 5.1, but never stepped up to 5.1.  This 
did build successfully.
Then, when we downloaded and built 5.2, this is where the error occurred.
We believe the 5.2 build was picking up a part of the (previous) 5.1 build, and 
mixing it with the 5.2 build (maybe tied to /usr/local/lib).
We decided to run the make UNINSTALL, and then ran the make install, and this 
resolved the issue.
