I thought openssl 0.9.7a didn't even have a dynamic engine? not sure. but openssl < 0.9.7d have some big problems with dynamic engines anyway, so we can't support them well. if you need to stay with that acient openssl version, you can use opensc 0.9.6 which has some very bad hacks to work with the old openssl version and might work. but of course it has more bugs and less features too.
