opensc is a software for using smart cards. depends on what card you are 
using...

opensc is not a firmware, but a software for using smart cards.
I don't think there is any open source smart card. but at least there
are java cardlets like musclecard that you could look at. the musclecard
code is open source. and it is partially supported by opensc - should work,
works for some, but not yet for me.

not sure what you exactly want to do? write a smart card operating system?
then it would be best to either implement the os for a javacard or some other
well known smart card. implementing the cryptoflex API would be great
(but if gemalto can somehow prevent you from doing that, you could still
go for javacard).

or write some software to be run on the smart card? then you need to go for 
NDA and whatever with some manufacturer or implement a javacard applet.
the later might be much more flexible.
