Maybe the time has come for the smart card community to realize
that we live in a web-world and therefore there is a need to be
able to personalize/provision cards using a standard web browser?

I'm now talking about PKI cards and not SIMs, passports, or EMV.

Just to verify that this requirement is for real, I was (completely
unprovoked...) recently asked by a customer at a large bank where
I installed a CA:

  "How can we issue login cards in any of our numerous branch offices
   using a standard W7 PC?"

Answer: Sorry,  You probably have to wait until SE-equipped mobile
devices become a fact but that's probably just around the corner.
