shameless plug or not, this is almost exactly what I was looking for, 
thanks a lot for the link! It was a bit tricky to build it standalone 
(i.e. without avango) on my system for Performer 3.2.0, but I managed to 
build and install it in the end...

When I save to .pfa I can check that it really saves the NURBS data, but I 
just can't get Performer to retessellate (or to get rid of the 
OpenInventor tessellation) the higher order geometries -- could you give 
me an example pfconv commandline for that?

As said above, I have 3.2.0 installed, but can try 3.2.1 if necessary -- 
the built libpfiv.so.5 is hopefully binary compatible (or if not, I'll 
just rebuild it. :-)
