Difficult it is not, work it is ;-). 

It is the only way to keep things consistent ! Technically there is no
difference between bug fix and feature.

That's why I would prefer not to put bug fixes in both branches
immediately at the same time, but make sure that the complete 1.8 head
is taken over. Otherwise it will get very messy. I did that for a couple
of times and it is feasible with a combination of cvs diff, patch and
manual work.
