My rules of thumb:

* if you just want to position a light source somewhere, use the beacon and 
leave the position at (0,0,0)
* the main/only good reason for using the position is if you want to attache 
the 
light source to another object, but not have it at the origin of that object. 
(e.g. headlights of a car)
