Benjamin, The LaunchPad PPA system had no issues building it (build log linked above). Same with the Debian build server. I'm not sure why it would have trouble with finding the distutils.core module when you try and build the package. I think distutils is built into Python. On my system, it loads distutils.core from /usr/lib/python2.6/distutils/core.py.
Also, I do not understand your question about dropping the Ubuntu change? Can you explain?
