In your original post you mention effects, are there any effects on the clips on the timeline? If so, which ones? Did you check you had the frei0r-plugins package installed?

I am running Openshot 1.1.3 I try and do anything with the video effects and it closes without a warning. And recently it closes when I try to play any video that I put on the timeline.
