i agree with Chris' approach - it's no different than the 'no facelights' option. they bother some common users but are quite useful in machinima and virtual photography. it's the responsibility of the grid operator(s) to enable/disable popular features.

also, not everyone is confused or frustrated by display names and not everyone abuses them. they definitely have a function and a place, even in OpenSim (eventually). keep in mind, we're using SL as a reference point here... the rest of that thought should be self-explanatory ;)

more valuable than a personal opinion about a feature would be some sort of documentation illustrating any caveats users/administrators should be made aware of in the interest of community education.

Just my two cents ... But I believe a simple solution for that would be to have a line like EnableDisplayNames somewhere in OpenSim.ini to enable and disable use of it (if it were to be implemented). If you don't prefer to implement Display Names on your grid then set it to false.

Just speculations of course =)

May I respectfully ask what gives you the right to determine how others should set their display names, and whether what they choose to do is right or wrong? Even if people do use it in a way that we might wish were different, why shouldn't we have the feature and the ability to set it as we choose, regardless of how others use it?

SImple reason I dont like it peronal.
Viewers use screen names first. and that makes the list terrible.
If the fix that i dont see any problem at all. screen names last.
Because screen names its hard to find somebody back with all the character abuse inside.
