I think this is one of those philosophical questions - without diminishing what others have done - does it matter - I always vote for progress and clean code over backwards compatibility. Let's say one plugin is using it, would it be worth keeping it in because of that - though I totally understand giving notice for those to update. This probably came across as harsh and I don't mean it to be - sorry.
