What about moderating the first edit and whitelist? It's far more difficult for 
a bot to submit a relevant edit than
decide if opensim is a cat or a server.

Yes, it might be too much to ask for someone to go through a list of potential accounts and consistently spot bot names (though they do tend to stick out like a sore thumb).

Perhaps something like this combined with simple questions on account creation to provide a second line of defense. Getting complicated, though.
