Jay,

It depends on whether you have a local daemon. If you haven't, slptool will
multicast it's request to the slp multicast group, which all SLP daemons are
listening on. If you have a local daemon, then slptool uses a back door to
talk to the local daemon and ask it for it's list of known daemons. It then
unicasts each daemon with the query. It's marginally quicker this way as the
initial multicast is bypassed. Just how much quicker depends on your timeout
settings in slp.conf.

Cheers,
Matt

Forgive my ignorance, but how do slptool and slpd interact? Does slpd sit
there listening for broadcasts about what other hosts on the net offer, and
then slptool asks it what it has seen? Or does slptool broadcast a message
asking "what's out there", which may get several responses, including from
the local slpd if it has anything to advertise? Or is it a little of both,
or something else entirely?

Thanks,
Jay
