Actually, why is the serverside Data API necessary to achieve this?
Facebook's javascript API for example is capable of achieving this
[ie. external websites/platforms accessing a user's social data], so
why would serverside technologies be needed?

In any case, this would be a great feature imho. An example of how
it's done with Facebook is www.mosoto.com, they make excellent use of
the social data and these types of applications would be really cool
to see for opensocial as well.
