Phew! That's surely a lot of questions to be answered on the mailing
list. I think you are getting boggled up because of way tooo many
resources on your table. :)
So instead of answering them, I'll just provide some pointers:

1. I am told my presentation is be a good start. ;) Very short, very high level:
http://www.slideshare.net/bipin/phpcampshindig-an-opensocial-container-presentation/
2. A bit deeper dig by Chris Schalk:
http://developers.sun.com/learning/javaoneonline/2008/pdf/TS-6574.pdf?cid=925742
 [Warning: PDF]
3. Article on Shindig by Chris Schalk:
http://chrisschalk.com/shindig_docs/io/shindig-io.html
4. Some great articles by Rajdeep Dua (although the Shindig
Architecture once are not very necessary initially, yet it'd great if
you can spend sometime on them later):
http://sites.google.com/site/opensocialarticles/

Finally:
1. Please understand that Shindig is a moving target and does not have
a stable version yet. So a few things in the above
articles/presentations may not hold true.
2. Join the Shindig mailing list. There's absolutely no substitute for that. :)
3. There's no substitute for hard work either. Happy reading. ;)

HTH,
Bipin Upadhyay.
