After several weeks of discussion, the OGB has approved a new Project
Instantiation Process as of 2 May 2006. The full text of this process
is available at the new OGB Policies and Guidance page at
http://opensolaris.org/os/community/ogb/policies/. We'll be updating
the text at http://opensolaris.org/os/projects/ shortly as well.
High-level overview of the new process:
- Projects must be endorsed by Community Groups and may be
endorsed by more than one.
- The usual way to start a new project is to bring up the topic
within a Community Group's discussion list, hash out the issues
there, and then request project creation when agreement is
reached.
- Community Groups are self-governing, and determine for
themselves how they want to endorse projects, which projects to
endorse, and what process (if any) they'll use to do so. They may
also revoke endorsements. See section 8 of the OpenSolaris
Constitution[0] for details on how Community Groups conduct
business.
- Community Groups are expected to communicate to the OGB
which Projects have been endorsed, and must provide the required
information to have resources allocated to new Projects.
Community Groups may wish to assign this responsibility to their
Facilitators (and those which have not yet nominated one are
encouraged to do so).
- A new mailing list, project-announce, has been created. Each
new Project announcement will be posted to this list when a
Community Group sponsors it. You can subscribe via mailman[1].
- We hope to be able to automate most of this process so that in
the future, a Community Group can create Projects from a simple
web form.
This policy is subject to revision from time to time; subscribe to the
OGB discussion mailing list[2] to participate when similar issues
arise in the future. Future policy changes will be announced as well
as published on the OGB Policies and Guidance page.
