Hi all,
We will be holding the next FROSUG (Front Range OpenSolaris User Group)
meeting on Tuesday, October 24, 2006. Our presenter is Bill Knoche. He
will be speaking on the topic of "Porting Linux Applications to
Solaris". In addition to the main presentation, Jon Bowman will be
giving the "OpenSolaris Update" - a short presentation about the latest
happenings in OpenSolaris. We hope to make the "OpenSolaris Update" a
regular occurrence at the FROUSG meetings in order to help people stay
up to date on what is happening in the OpenSolaris community.
Information about the "Porting Linux Applications to Solaris"
presentation and our presenter:
This presentation will cover some of the features in Solaris 10 and
beyond that make it easier to port applications to Solaris. Along with
that, Bill will cover the different aspects of application porting. For
example, how to determine the scope and do an analysis of the work, how
to do the actual port and identify some of the issues (and their
resolution) that one may run into, how to test the application and
finally, how to support the work into the future. Lastly, lets not
forget that there are already a bunch of applications that already run
on Solaris so... Bill will also cover the different resources that you
can use in order to find open source applications that are already
supported!
Bill Knoche has been with Sun for over 19 years. He has worked in
almost every business unit and in a wide range of roles. Currently, he
is a staff engineer in the I/O Technologies group in Market Development
Engineering where they run a certification program called Solaris Ready
which provides assistance to IHVs (Independent Hardware Vendors) with
Solaris and Sun platforms.
