Questions:
1. Is the split-off disk set a one-side of a new mirror or just a
non-redundant pool?
2. Can you split the mirror into two 2-way or multiway mirrors, leaving
the original multiway mirror non-compromised?
This would save time for resilvering of a split-off disk set if a
new mirror is needed.

The following practice could be a best way to avoid compromising the
original mirrored pool and creating split-off mirror:
1. Attach a new set of disks to a mirrored pool, a new set being
sufficient for at least a 2-way mirror
2. Create a 4-way (or more way) mirror
3. Resilver attached disk set
4 Split resulting mirror into 2 mirror

Is it possible with your proposal?
