Thanks for your kind replies... While porting linux 2.1, around 1,50,000 lines of code was enough to get a decent coverage of the kernel, fs, mm, terminal driver, the hard disk driver etc - so basically the essentials. and it easily took more than a year. i think i will have a go with Solaris too, just for the heck of it. at least it will be involving, and will keep the beer away :) but wondering how much "coverage" is possible with an equivalent number of lines in the case of solaris...
yeah i guess in the end its rather equivalent to building a user thread library which uses the logic and data structures of a particular operating system.
