As far as patching ON code, we're not planning on using GIT, so I
wouldn't bother trying to support it.
Uhm... this sounds like "company thinking", e.g. "...we only do what
we're paid for and won't do anything else (even if it's nice/usefull)
until someone throws money after us..." (erm, that's not thought as
offense...) ... ;-(
... IMO it would be nice to take a small look beyond the rim of the
teacup (or how the german phrase "... Über den Tellerrand schauen..."
can be translated...) and check what else may be "nice" to support...
I suppose I think it's more consistent with the "nothing superfluous"
theme that motivates ON integrations, than any form of corporate
  tunnel vision.

Erm, Ok... AFAIK the "company thinking" was a larger brick than I
intended to throw around.. sorry... ;-(
... I just sometimes _wish_ that some things get designed&&supported
with extensibilty, alternatives and/or future work in mind...

that's why I am asking whether there are other things we may want to fix
with this bug, too (that would save trouble for people who may be
interested in other version control software).
The question is whether there is a large, real population to support
here, or merely a hypothetical one.

AFAIK OpenSolaris tries to support two SCMs, Mercurial and Subversion,
right ? IMO both should be supported for all OpenSolaris repositories...

It supports two SCMs, but only one per-consolidation. I certainly have no intent of supporting every combination that can be dreamed up 'just because'.
