That's somewhat unlikely to work.  If you're building your own images,
you should be using BFU to install them.

It's also helpful to use LU -- use lucreate to turn that empty ufs
slice into a boot environment, switch over to it with luactivate, and
then BFU this alternate environment.  That way, you'll be able to
switch back to a "normal" environment for upgrades.

(It's not generally possible to upgrade a boot environment that's been
BFU'd.)
