why not discuss opensolaris vs. linux from a programmers perspective?! the main point of opensolaris/linux or any other OS is to do programming. maybe a topic on the viability of programming opensolaris vs. linux would be useful. i have recently installed opensolaris on my amd64 machine and have linux suse 9.2 on my intel box. i am more a linux user then solaris. i have to admit that i try to setup my programming evironment to be simillar to linux and i think that i have succeeded quite well. the sys admin stuff particulary the svcs, admin boot startup scripts are quite different then linux which confused me at first. as a UNIX programmer i am interested in all versions of unix that are free and open.
my main complaint about opensolaris is the installation process vs. linux installation process. under linux the installation process helps you configure your printer, soundcard,X,networking in a very clear easy way. with opensolaris it seems complicated and you need to be a sys admin to get everything working. as distros come about i am sure this will change. anyway, have enjoyed following this thread and hope more unix people get involved in opensolaris and still continue to use linux as well. it is not either or but both OS's are fun and interesting especially compared to windows!! michael This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
