The main migration problems from SunOS-4 to SunOS-5 have been
caused by the fact that applications and libraries for SVr4 have
been made by AT&T from SVr3 source regardless whether BSD
or SunOS-4 did fix important bugs many years go.

Avoiding similar problems with a 5-6 transition just meand avoiding
to by intention braking many interfaces.
