Any system based on binary package management cannot be as flexible as a system which works with source-based packages. At least in the world of open-source software, there are often important configuration options which must be chosen at the start of the build process of a certain piece of software. Additionally, the target CPU for a particular binary must be selected before the build - the performance penalty of using binaries targetted to a different CPU vary, but in some cases it is quite significant (such as on the Pentium 4).
Distributing packages as binaries may be necessary for closed source software, but there's no need for such a limitation with open source software. Can you tell that I've been enjoying Gentoo Linux? :-) This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
