Both BSD and SysV (and IV, and III, and so on) stem from Bell Labs code, which 
subsequently is AT&T code, from which BSD was forked; some of the functionality 
was backported into SysV, some not; but both flavors share the same ancestry. 
This ancestry is now SVR4 in its modern incarnation.
