Over the winter break I spent time at Fry's pondering building my next machine and Solaris Network Appliance project definitelycame to mind. The hard part will be deciding what it does, It could server mail, time, nfs, samba, http, dhcp, ldap, cups or all of these, let the scope creep begin :)
I guess phase 1 is just serving files to Windows, Macs, Linux & Solaris machines. So we need dhcp, a nfs server and a samba server. Many people have already done this I'm sure there is a lot of knowledge that can be captured around low cost, low power consumption and low noise optimization. I kicked around a few ideas on paper based around cheap 64 bit semprons and just using the IDE/SATA controllers on the motherboard with 1gb memory, finding a good power supply seemed the hardest part - efficient under light load but still powerful enough for 4 drives + motherboard. I came to the conclusion that my file server would be the most powerful machine I have ( how quickly today's bottom of the light out performs yesterday's top of the line) . So I'm off to build a new desktop, but I be back for the solaris storage 'n' accessories appliance. It will be fun Robin This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
