This kind of problem can happen with hardware or driver issues on any OS. The big question for me is: "Is the session hung or is the machine hung". Can the mouse move? If so, try telneting from another machine on your network and try to bring it down gracefully. If the mouse doesn't move or the telnet fails, then the only recourse is to power down.
