The MPLS project is an effort to support Multiprotocol Label Switching (as described in IETF Standards-Track RFCs 3031, 3032, and others) on Solaris. This protocol is roughly like X.25 or ATM, but in an IP-centric context. It's useful for creating VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), remote bridges, and traffic engineering, and it's closely related to other IP networking technologies such as the Quagga routing suite.
In the short term, the project aims to provide the MPLS label stack encoding mechanisms and a basic framework for MPLS support. In the longer term, the project will provide basic MPLS tools (such as LDP) and programming interfaces suitable for higher-level protocols. (Whether other MPLS-related protocols such as RSVP-TE or CR-LDP might be part of this project or a follow on remains to be determined.) This is being proposed as an open project; anyone willing to participate is welcome. The initial leadership will be Pedro A. Aranda GutiƩrrez and myself. -- James Carlson, KISS Network <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sun Microsystems / 1 Network Drive 71.232W Vox +1 781 442 2084 MS UBUR02-212 / Burlington MA 01803-2757 42.496N Fax +1 781 442 1677 _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
