In my case, I'm a total newbie when it comes to Solaris, I've tried
Solaris Express (Sol 11, that is) directly.
It worked like a charm. I can do so many things with it, from the
typical *nix activities to web-browsing and listening to music.
ZFS and zones are included and, depending on what you intend to do,
remote installation/upgrade is possible.
Still discovering it but I definitely suggest to try it!

I can only say +1 to that!
