Seems like a fine line between what is known as the community and the distribution, and I think your explanation only helps to show how muddy this area is. I like to think of OpenSolaris as the distribution, and when you say community x (i.e., JDS, X, whatever) is a part of OpenSolaris, it implies the distribution.
